Notebooks in AI Mode: Search vs Gemini Notebook

Author: NotebookLM.link Editorial

Same Gemini Notebook library, third door: notebooks in AI Mode in Google Search. What syncs, what never does, when to leave Search for Studio.

People searching “notebooks in AI Mode,” “Gemini Notebook AI Mode Search,” or “use NotebookLM in Google Search” usually need one map: your notebooks now open from a third door—AI Mode in Google Search—not only the standalone app or the Gemini chat app. This guide says what syncs, what stays separate, and when Search is the wrong place to work.

Gemini Notebook (still widely searched as NotebookLM) remains the standalone research product. Notebooks in AI Mode lets you access, create, edit, and chat with the same notebook library from Google Search’s AI Mode. Facts follow Google’s Help page About notebooks in AI Mode in Google Search and are subject to change by region and language.

Notebooks in AI Mode: three doors—Gemini Notebook, Notebooks in Gemini, and Google Search AI Mode
Same library, three surfaces — grounding and Studio differ by door

1. Three doors, one library (not three products)

Search results still mix these labels. Keep them separate:

  • Gemini Notebook (standalone): the research app formerly called NotebookLM—Sources-only Chat grounding plus the full Studio panel.
  • Notebooks in Gemini: the Notebooks section inside the Gemini chat app; syncs Sources and instructions with standalone, but chat may add web search and other tools.
  • Notebooks in AI Mode (Google Search): notebooks you own appear in Search AI Mode; you can create, edit, and chat there too—English-only today, and unavailable in the EEA per Help.

So “notebooks in AI Mode” is not a rename of Gemini Notebook. It is a Search-side door onto the same notebook objects, with different grounding, chat history, and feature limits.

2. What officially syncs—and what never does

Per Google Help on notebooks in AI Mode:

  • Syncs: custom instructions; rename; add/remove Sources; notebook deletions. Refresh if an update is slow to appear.
  • Chat does not sync: AI Mode chats stay in AI Mode only. Gemini Notebook and Gemini Apps chats do not appear in AI Mode, and vice versa.
  • Grounding: Gemini Notebook Chat stays exclusively on notebook Sources. AI Mode (like Gemini Apps) may ground on Sources plus web search and other tools.
  • No Studio in Search: Audio Overview, Video Overview, Infographics, Slide Decks, and other Studio artifacts are not generated in AI Mode—open Gemini Notebook for those.
  • Sharing: notebooks you own that are shared with others still show in AI Mode for you. Notebooks shared with you by someone else appear in Gemini Notebook, not in AI Mode.
  • Play Books: eligible Play Books ebook Sources are added and used in Gemini Notebook only, not in AI Mode.
  • Privacy note: Help states AI Mode chats may be used for ads monetization, personalization, and model improvement; notebook Sources and instructions are treated differently—read the Help privacy section before putting sensitive material into Search-side chats.

3. Decision matrix: when to open AI Mode vs standalone

Use this chooser instead of memorizing brand charts:

  • Need Audio / Video Overview, Infographic, Slide Deck, or quizzes from Studio? → Open Gemini Notebook.
  • Need answers that must not leave your Sources? → Prefer Gemini Notebook Chat (exclusive grounding).
  • Already researching in Google Search and want your notebook + web in one thread? → Notebooks in AI Mode (English; non-EEA).
  • Living in continuous Gemini chat with tools? → Notebooks in Gemini—see the two-door comparison.
  • Working from a notebook someone shared with you? → Expect Gemini Notebook; those shared libraries do not appear in AI Mode.
  • Adding Play Books / Expert Intelligence ebooks? → Gemini Notebook only.

4. Practical setup so the Search door does not surprise you

  • Treat Gemini Notebook as source-of-truth for Sources and Studio. Use AI Mode when you want Search-native follow-ups with the same library.
  • Edit custom instructions once. They apply across Gemini Notebook, Gemini Apps, and AI Mode.
  • Do not expect one unified transcript. Keep AI Mode threads for Search work; keep standalone Chat for citation-heavy research you will verify against Sources.
  • Confirm region and language. Help currently lists AI Mode notebooks as English-only and excludes the EEA—check in-product if your account differs.
  • Sensitive Sources: prefer standalone Chat when you need exclusive grounding and the Help privacy model for notebook library data; treat AI Mode chats as a Search surface.
